Watchmaker tools and movement detail

— Competitive Advantages —

The difference is in how we approach each piece.

What sets Tickwright apart.

Watchmaking workshops vary considerably in how they communicate, what they document, and how they handle the unexpected. These are the points that distinguish the Tickwright approach.

Everything in Writing

Assessment findings, photographs, and agreed scope — all documented before work begins.

Formally Trained Staff

Both watchmakers hold formal qualifications — Singapore School of Watchmaking and WOSTEP certification.

Category-Specific Equipment

Dedicated chronograph test equipment and calibrated pressure testing apparatus — not improvised substitutes.

Defined Scope, No Surprises

Service scope is agreed upfront. Any additional findings are communicated in writing before the cost changes.

Transparent Pricing in RM

Three services, three published prices. RM 340–780 depending on service type, with no hidden add-ons.

13 Years in Petaling Jaya

A local, established presence — not a pop-up counter or a franchise with variable staff quality.

01 — Expertise

Qualifications that translate to practice.

Both watchmakers at Tickwright hold formal certifications from recognised institutions. Razif Hamdan trained at the School of Watchmaking in Singapore; Lim Mei Ying holds a WOSTEP certificate. This is not simply a credential claim — it reflects a baseline of shared language, method, and diagnostic habit that shapes every intake.

  • Formal training in mechanical and quartz disciplines
  • Ongoing engagement with the watchmaking community
  • Clear about what falls outside current capability

"The difference between a qualified watchmaker and an enthusiastic technician is not always visible on the surface of the work. It tends to show in what they notice, what they document, and what they decline to do."

— Workshop philosophy

The Intake Process

  1. 01 Piece arrives at workshop; condition noted on intake form.
  2. 02 Diagnostic assessment performed with category-specific equipment.
  3. 03 Written report prepared with photographs; sent to owner.
  4. 04 Owner reviews and provides written approval to proceed.
  5. 05 Work completed; tested where applicable; returned with service summary.

02 — Process

A defined process for every intake.

The Tickwright intake process is consistent regardless of service type. It was designed to prevent the common failure modes in watch repair: work proceeding without a clear brief, cost changes without notice, and returns without documentation.

  • Standardised five-step intake and return process
  • Written approval required at step four — no exceptions
  • Service summary returned with every completed piece

03 — Technology

The right equipment for each category.

Chronograph work requires dedicated test equipment that can isolate column-wheel and cam-actuated differences. Quartz servicing requires coil continuity measurement. Crystal work requires calibrated pressure testing. Each category has its own tooling at Tickwright — not shared multi-purpose instruments.

  • Dedicated chronograph test station
  • Coil continuity and module testing equipment
  • Calibrated water resistance pressure tester

04 — Service

Communication that does not require chasing.

Each intake comes with an expected turnaround range communicated at the point of deposit. The written report is sent when ready — you do not need to call to enquire about progress. If anything changes, you hear about it before the work changes.

  • Expected turnaround communicated at intake
  • Written report sent proactively — no need to chase
  • Scope changes always communicated before proceeding

05 — Value

Published prices. No ambiguity.

Tickwright publishes its service prices directly: RM 340 for quartz module and battery service, RM 620 for crystal and gasket replacement, RM 780 for chronograph function assessment. The assessment price covers the diagnostic and report — any repair work beyond that is a separate, approved decision.

  • Three services with published prices in Ringgit
  • Diagnostic fee covers only the assessment and report
  • Additional work always separately approved

06 — Outcomes

What you receive with every service.

Beyond the physical work, each completed service produces a paper trail of value: a written assessment, photographs of the movement or concern area, and a service summary that stays with the owner. This record has practical use — it supports insurance documentation, resale provenance, and future service decisions.

  • Written diagnostic report with photographs
  • Service summary returned with the piece
  • Useful for insurance, resale, and future service records

— Comparison —

Tickwright vs. Typical Providers

Without naming other businesses, this is an honest account of where the Tickwright approach differs from what is commonly encountered in the Malaysian watch service market.

Feature Tickwright Typical Workshop
Written diagnostic report Always Rarely
Photographs of findings Included Not offered
Prior written approval required Mandatory Verbal only
Published prices On website Quoted on request
Formally qualified watchmakers Both staff Varies
Category-specific test equipment Per service General only
Water resistance testing after crystal work Where applicable Not standard
Service summary returned with piece Every service Rare
Clear capability disclosure At intake Inconsistent

— What Makes Us Different —

Unique to Tickwright.

The Photo-Documentation Standard

Every assessment includes close-up photographs of the movement, dial, and any observed concerns. These are included in the written report as standard — not available on request, not subject to a separate fee.

The Non-Commencement Principle

Work does not begin until you have seen the report and signed off. This is unusual in the local market, where it is common for workshops to proceed on the assumption that the client wants things fixed as quickly as possible.

Honest Scope Limitation

Tickwright declines work it cannot perform well. This is not a common position. The practical effect is that clients who bring pieces beyond current capability are told clearly at intake, and where possible pointed toward a more appropriate resource.

OEM-Matched Component Sourcing

Battery cells and gasket sets are sourced from established suppliers and matched to the original specification. Generic substitutes are not used when original-specification parts are available.
